“I thought a Colourist was an expert?”
A Master Colour Expert (MCE) is a title achieved by colourists if they have completed the industry's most prestigious colour programme. The Master Colour Programme is equivalent to a 12 month intensive Masters degree in Colouring at Wella Studios, London.
It involves the in-depth science of hair, including structure and how different colours affect it, how lifestyle can affect hair growth/loss, and how hair loses pigmentation resulting in grey hair. The wealth of knowledge obtained from The Master Colour Programme ensures MCE’s have an excellent understanding of how and why certain colours are used, and how best to fix colour corrections.
The course is divided into 4 stages which includes a timed exam with a minimum pass rate in order to continue with stages 3 & 4.
Assessments are carried out throughout all stages of the course, including practical days working alongside guest artists for inspiration and colour techniques. Roxie's guest artist was Hairdresser of the Year 2019 Robert Eaton.
The final practical exam has a pass rate of 85% or more to be awarded with the title 'Master Colour Expert' Roxie achieved 96% in her final exam in 2017. Achieving this title also allows her the insights to any new colours, techniques and regular training with Wella before they get launched to regular colourists and salons.
